I don't understand art. And I don't mean that I don't understand why it
exists. I mean, I don't understand it in the same way I don't understand poetry.
It doesn't make sense to me. I can look at a painting, or read the words, and it
still leaves me confused because I'm not good at finding the "hidden meaning" in
things.
German Expressionism interests me. It started because of films like
Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Faust and Metropolis. The sets were so
bizarre, like something you would see in a dream. They didn't look like anything
that could exist in reality.
My interest in Expressionism led me to Ludwig Meidner's work. I can't sit
here and pretend that I'm an authority on it. I'm not. As I said, art is not
something I can comprehend. But I'm still fascinated by it. I like looking at
his work and I can't explain the reasoning behind it. I read that his
Apocalyptic Landscapes predate World War I, showing a city in ruins. That's
about all I know.
Here are some of my favorites.
