Hana, the e-book companion to Delirium by Lauren Oliver

When I first read Delirium, one of the questions I was left with at the end of the book was, why didn't Hana leave with Lena? Hana was the one who went to illegal parties and concerts to begin with. She had [unhappy] tears in her eyes the day of her evaluation. So why didn't she try to escape into the Wilds?

Lauren Oliver's novella seems to answer that question.

Major spoilers after the jump!

This novella is told from Hana's point of view and takes place during the events of Delirium. The new information you learn is that while Hana was frequenting illegal parties and concerts, she was meeting up with a boy named Steve. Hana, not being a stupid girl, wants to know if their...Relationship? Is more than physical. She asks Steve if he likes her and what will happen to them. Steve is pretty transparent and Hana realizes that he's only interested in having fun, he doesn't love her. Understandably, she's hurt.

The same night she questioned Steve about his feelings for her, there was a raid on the party they were at. Regulators hit people with nightsticks and unleashed dogs to attack anyone who attempted to escape. Hana started thinking that Lena was right to avoid these parties. They were too dangerous, it wasn't worth it.

When Hana finds out about Lena and Alex, she's jealous. Jealous that Alex seems to be stealing away her best friend. Jealous that Lena is so happy and in love with him. Of course she's jealous. She was losing her best friend and she felt used by a boy she was developing feelings for.

At the end of the novella, Hana walks past a flyer urging people to report any suspicious behavior. She thinks, "I'm sorry, Lena." And that's how the story ends.

...

I had to take Delirium off the shelf and reread the end of the book. Is it possible Hana told the Regulators about Lena and Alex? How else would they have known to search the house they always met at? Hana was the only person who knew about it. And she was jealous.

Still, I have a hard time believing that she would do anything to hurt Lena. Especially since she tried to help Lena get a message back to Alex at the end of Delirium. Would she have done that if she were responsible for them being caught in the first place? Maybe she felt guilty for betraying her friend.

Hopefully this will be explained when Pandemonium is released in a few weeks.
