He's here to interrupt my currently scheduled reading

And I'm okay with that.
(And by "he," I mean Tim Gunn, not the raptor. I was reading Phantom of the Opera, but now it will have to wait.)

He's probably leaving tomorrow

And the battery in my camera is dead, so. Phone picture.
Cagney is going to miss him so much. :( He'll miss her, too. Since they started getting along, all he does is follow her around.

Bogart and Sam

It should be noted that Bogart ran away right after I took this picture.
(Sam isn't named after Sam Neill, surprisingly. He's named after Sam Spade from The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett.)

It doesn't have a name, but I call it Sam

This picture was taken with my phone, which is why it's terrible.

Sam is a stray with an injured leg. Someone else was supposed to be taking this kitten, but they did not follow through.
I won't throw Sam back outside with an injury, especially since it's getting colder now.
So now I'm stuck with an adorable kitten, and I can't get attached to it. Oh, and Cagney and Bogart hate it.

All I want from Nintendo in the future

1) I want the Fatal Frame 2 remake to be brought to America. Let's not have a repeat of Fatal Frame 4.
2) These Mario platformers? Please implement online multiplayer for them. There's no reason not to when you have the resources to do so.
3) No more motion controls.
That's it. That's all it will take to get me to stop complaining about them. I'll forgive them for the Wiimote and the Fatal Frame 4 debacle. Because, really, I love Nintendo...Just not anything they've done since the Wii was released. They can even make 3D games and I won't talk about what a useless gimmick it is.
Please, Nintendo. Just those three simple things. Stop holding the games that are actuallygood hostage. Let us play Super Mario Universe 12 (that's obviously not a real game) online. And get rid of the non-responsive motion controls. <3

What's on my bookcase?

First things first, try to ignore the glare. :)
The only reason I took these pictures is because I feel like what's on my bookcase gives a clearer idea of what I like than anything else would. These are the movies and books I enjoy most. All the other DVDs and books that wouldn't fit in there are stored somewhere else (or are on my desk, as is the case with my makeup book and the Dinosauria.)
And, I DO own the first season of Supernatural, but my father has been "borrowing" it for the past two years. Which means it's collecting dust in his house somewhere.
Also, the book whose title you cannot see (but whose pages are clearly visible on top of my games) is the Dinosaur Comics book. The book next to An Abundance of Katherines is The Picture of Dorian Gray. The playbill for Phantom of the Opera is stuck between Will Grayson, Will Grayson and Always Looking Up. Mana Khemia 2 is hidden behind The Hunger Games series because it came in a huge box and can't fit anywhere else. 13 Ghosts, House of Wax and House On Haunted Hill are the original movies, not the remakes. Except, technically, the Vincent Price version of House of Wax is a remake, but that DVD contains that one as well as the original.

What's the easiest way to take all the fun out of a game?

Add trophies to it.
And as if trophies in general don't suck all the fun right out of a game, add one in that requires you to kill 72,000 zombies in one playthrough, in a limited amount of time.
You may be thinking, "If they make you that miserable, just don't bother with the trophies." Sure, that makes sense. But my obsessive compulsive tendencies will not allow me to simply ignore them.
So when Capcom asks me to kill 72,000 zombies, rescue 50 survivors, consume all food items, enter every store and use/create all weapons...Of course I'm going to force myself to do it. And in doing so, I will kill ANY desire I had to play the game in the first place.
For the record, I'm on Day 2 and I've only killed 17,000+ zombies, so I think any hope Ihad of killing 72,000 zombies is officially dead. "Oh, I have an SUV, this is going to be SO easy!" Yeah. Right.

Capcom finally brought Crimson Heads back...Just not to Resident Evil.

Edit: Disregard this post. After spending more time on Dead Rising 2, I've decided I hate it. Quite a bit. So much, in fact, that I can't even be bothered typing a new post about my feelings towards it.
If I'm so sick, how can I post about Dead Rising 2 and not make that horror movies post for my 31 Days of Halloween folder? Well...Because I actually want to discuss this game. And because I attempted to discuss it in a video I recorded today, but I was having difficulty speaking, on top of having a thousand cutscenes play that I couldn't speak during, so I wasn't able to talk about it.
Dead Rising 2 is a major improvement over Dead Rising (at least the Wii version). The controls are so much better on the PS3 than they are on the Wii. Unless you're playing some sort of mini-games game on the Wii, motion controls just don't work. They are terrible for games that involve fighting off a horde of zombies or throwing some warped version of your daughter off your shoulders as you're running around a forest maze. I was very pleased with the controls for this game.
However. I was not happy with the changes they made to the now non-existent inventory screen. In the first game, you could pick up food and it would go directly into your inventory, while you would just hold on to any special weapons you picked up. They were separate. In Dead Rising 2, everything goes into your inventory. So if you have a handgun, a fire axe and orange juice, it's all in the top right corner of your screen. On the one hand, it's easier to cycle through your items that way. On the other hand, it means less inventory space.
The other issue is, if you have a weapon equipped and you pick up a food item, or catch a Queen Bee, that becomes equipped instead. I cannot stress just how many times I've wasted healing items and Queens because of this. If you have a weapon equipped, that should be the default, even when you pick up another item. There's no good reason for it to automatically be switched out with whatever you found lying around.
Co-op is a double edged sword. If you are killed, your partner can revive you. That should make it easier to progress through the game without having to repeatedly redo difficult sections, right? Well...Not really. Almost any time you're about to exit through a door, there's a large group of zombies (probably at least sixty, if not more) waiting to tear you apart. If your partner is not near you, you're stuck in the middle of those zombies until they get close enough that you're able to leave through the doors. It's not that bad early on in the game, but it's a huge problem once you're on Case 6. (No spoilers, even though the title hints at it.) I actually feel like I would have enjoyed Dead Rising 2 more if I had played it alone.
Any progress you make in the story while helping someone else co-op their game isn't saved on your game. That's surprising to me, considering how well Capcom did with the co-op for Resident Evil 5. As much as I don't particularly care for the direction that series has gone in, I love the co-op for it. I don't think it was implemented very well for Dead Rising 2. (Although, I have to admit, I was VERY annoyed with the person I played DR2 with, so that could have something to do with why I'm not fond of it.)
All of that aside, I really do like the game a lot. It's not perfect, but it exceeded my expectations.

As I type this...

I am in an enormous amount of pain from Wii-related injuries.
(Toy Story Mania is serious business.)
My wrist feels like it's going to fall off. Luckily, I don't think that's possible. But since it hurts to type, I quit.

It used to frustrate me when Nintendo would release things like this, but now it just makes me laugh

The Virtual Console gets maybe one release a month now, if we're lucky. And that's the only thing I've really used my Wii for since I bought it, aside from a few Wii games and playing Gamecube games. All they release now is WiiWare, and most of it...Is ridiculous. (I will say that I love Dr. Mario Online RX. And Mega Man 9 and 10 were worth it, even though they make me want to throw things.)
None of that can compare to this though...This is the description for the new DSiWare this week:
myNotebook: Tan™
Publisher: Nnooo
Players: 1
Price: 500 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: myNotebook allows you to take notes wherever you are. Just pop open your Nintendo DSi™ system and jot down your thoughts. Make a list and cross it off, or even play your favorite pen-and-paper games (games not included). You can personalize your notebook by drawing on the cover or by changing the paper type with 24 unlockable squared and lined paper styles. Use the pen or pencil to make notes or doodles and then erase the bits you don't like. With five ink colors, you'll always be able to make your notes and doodles look stylish. myNotebook also includes 128 pages to write on, plus the ability to export your pages to your Nintendo DSi Photo Album.
...I'm at a loss for words here. "24 unlockable squared and lined paper styles." Really, what is there to say?

Thank you, John Green, for putting this into perspective. I feel much better about it now.

Dating, after all, only ends one way: poorly. If you think about it, and Colin often did, all romantic relationships end in either (1) breakup, (2) divorce, or (3) death.
-An Abundance of Katherines
My failed relationships aren't as terrible as I thought. It could be worse. I could be dead. Not the point there at all, but still.
I like this book, but I still have Mockingjay on my mind. I wonder if re-reading it will help me feel any better about it...Probably not. It will just give me more time to analyze the story and let those emotions sink in. I read through it so quickly the first time that I didn't have time to think about what was happening. Imagine actually taking the time to dwell on how tragic that ending was?

Nintendo, this is why I don't love you anymore

My Wii has been glowing blue for two days now, probably because of some message Nintendo sent out about a useless update.
I cannot sleep because it is SO obnoxiously bright and I need my room to be really dark or I have trouble falling asleep.
But I'm not giving in, Nintendo. I'm not turning that thing on to check a message I don't even care about. I'll unplug it before I let you win.

Bogart loved/hated Mockingjay, too

The more I think about it...And I've been thinking about it a lot, I can't seem to get Mockingjay off of my mind...That book could very well be my favorite in the series. It wasn't at first, because I was so depressed by the end of it and I was disappointed that Peeta wasn't really...Peeta anymore. But thinking about it...That book got the most intense reaction out of me. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire were amazing, but I've never read a book and felt so awful and broken down afterwards. The fact that it could draw such strong emotions out of me speaks volumes about the subject matter in Mockingjay. I hate it for having no boundaries and making me feel so horrible after reading it, but I also love it for those very same reasons.

Bogart was wearing Junpei's hat

Either you know what it is or you don't. (And no, I have never and will never wear that.)

Mockingjay - A Non-Review (Review)

You should know there are spoilers for The Hunger Games, Catching Fire andMockingjay in this post. However, I will not be spoiling who dies, who lives, who falls in love or the ending of Mockingjay. I'm leaving it up to you to read the novel.

Mockingjay

I'll probably do a full review at some point, but I'm only on page 83 at the moment.
And it's good...But I'm disappointed that Peeta hasn't played a bigger part in the book so far. Of course he wouldn't. The Capitol has him, and the story follows Katniss. So he wouldn't show up much, would he? Still, I hope they rescue him soon. Before the last one hundred pages. I want him to be a large part of the final chapter of The Hunger Games, or I'll be left very unsatisfied, regardless of how it all turns out.
I tried to see it from both perspectives...My own, which is that Katniss loves Peeta, and the other group of people who believe she's in love with Gale. I still don't get it. Even after re-reading the first two books. It's going to take a lot of convincing at this point to get me to buy into that, if that's how Suzanne Collins decided to end it.
As for District 13, I have mixed feelings there. But that will be saved for if/when I do a complete review.
One last thing, every time Cinna's name is mentioned, I get a little more depressed. His fate has not yet been confirmed, but considering what happened in Catching Fire, and what's been said so far in Mockingjay, it's not looking very good.

One book down

Finished re-reading The Hunger Games this afternoon. Now I just have to finish Catching Fire before Mockingjay gets here (apparently, on the 26th according to Amazon). That shouldn't be difficult.
That's the issue. I could probably finish that book by tomorrow afternoon if I wanted to. And that would leave me with those four John Green novels. Tempting. Do I really want to start reading them before Mockingjay gets here? What if it gets here early and I'm in the middle of reading another book? It may seem ridiculous, but I'm honestly perplexed by this situation. I can't explain just how excited I actually am that Mockingjay is almost here.
I've spent a significant amount of time debating the pros and cons of Battle Royale and The Hunger Games, trying to determine which I prefer. Because even though they're so different, you can't ignore the similarities between them. I love Battle Royale. It left such an impression on me that I had nightmares about it after I read it. (Didn't love that part very much.) I realize now that I can't really choose one over the other until I read Mockingjay. And what's the point anyway? They ARE different. There's no reason to choose one over the other. It's so easy to compare them, but why bother when the similarities end with kids being forced to kill eachother in order to ensure their own survival?
(I'd still like to do a movie/book comparison of Battle Royale once I have the attention span to devote enough time to it. I already know it would be lengthy, since I started one several months ago before realizing I would have at least twenty pages of notes from the first few chapters alone.)
And because I'm all over the place, let me point out that the comparisons between The Hunger Games and Twilight confuse me to no end. Look, I haven't read any of those Twilight books. I watched the first movie and I just didn't get the appeal of it at all. As I understand it, that series is about vampires and werewolves. How does that have anything to do with The Hunger Games? It doesn't. Just because there's a love triangle in both series, people seem to feel this need for comparison between them.
Let's think about this. Casablanca. Gilda. The Roaring Twenties. Etc. They all had love triangles. Is anyone comparing Twilight to Casablanca? No. And do you know why? Because it's ridiculous. So I really wish I didn't see "Team Edward/Team Jacob" every time I read something about who Katniss should end up with at the end of Mockingjay.

The Nightingale and the Rose

"What a silly thing Love is," said the Student as he walked away. "It is not half as useful as Logic, for it does not prove anything, and it is always telling one of things that are not true."
(From The Nightingale and the Rose by Oscar Wilde)
I don't actually agree with that at all, but the cynic in me (the one that ruled my teens and the first few years of my twenties) enjoyed it.
I've been reading The Complete Short Stories of Oscar Wilde...Mostly because I loved The Picture of Dorian Gray so much. The conclusion I've come to so far is that these stories are beautiful. Normally, if I'm reading a short story, it includes dialogue such as, "The cheaper the crook, the gaudier the patter." (Except, not THAT line, because that's actually from The Maltese Falcon, which was not a short story.) But these stories are beautifully written...And they end tragically. So in the end, I'm left feeling confused. Not confused by the stories, but confused by conflicting emotions. Still, I'm enjoying them.
This is my terrible attempt at keeping my word about more book reviews. The past two weeks were hectic. I'm trying.

It's not being a fangirl, it's knowing what I want from a gaming console.

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this on here, so I'm going to now.
Up until 2007, I ONLY owned Nintendo consoles. The NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube and Gameboy Advance SP. (I own a DS now, but that was after 2007, so it's irrelevant.) I loved Nintendo, that was all I needed. The Xbox wasn't even on the radar for me, and I couldn't stand the thought of Sony. So what happened?
When I bought my Gamecube, I mostly played survival horror games on it. Resident Evil. Resident Evil 0. Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil 3. Resident Evil Code Veronica X. Eternal Darkness. (I also own Resident Evil 4, but let's be serious. At what point is that ever a survival horror game? Other than the two seconds you play as Ashley.) I loved survival horror, and I wanted to try more games in that genre. Sadly, MOST of them were on the PS2, including the Silent Hill series. But, as luck would have it, Silent Hill 2 was also a PC game. So I bought it. That's when my love for Nintendo, exclusively, went out the window.
I was amazed by Silent Hill 2. It was scary and it had a really incredible story, albeit with pretty dull gameplay, but I've always overlooked that because it's completely worth it. I wanted to play the rest of the series. The only way to do that, though, was to buy a PS2. Or, the other option, a PS3 with backwards compatibility. And with Silent Hill: Homecoming announced for the PS3 (along with Resident Evil 5), the PS3 was the best option. Even if it did make me cringe.
So I got my PS3, and it was gorgeous. Best looking console I've ever owned, hands down. And it did EVERYTHING. I could store pictures, music and movies on it, go on the internet, message people, and on top of all that, play games. It was basically a computer. Now I could play all the games I was never able to play before (except for when Mana Khemia 2 came out for the PS2 last summer and it was not compatible with my 80GB PS3, forcing me to buy a PS2, which I also love now). I bought the entire Silent Hill series. Siren. Kuon. Haunting Ground. Clock Tower 3. And the Fatal Frame series. Then, something happened.
Fatal Frame 4, for reasons completely unknown, was announced as a Wii exclusive. None of the previous games had ever been released on a Nintendo console. Why start now? Oh, that's right, because I didn't own a Wii and it was still impossible to find one in stores at that point. Solution? Ask my cousin, who was a Gamestop employee at the time, to put a Wii on hold for me as soon as the next shipment came in. Problem solved! I now owned a Wii, and it was so cute and tiny next to my giant PS3. My giant, bulky PS3 that took up so much space...
For a couple months, I really loved my Wii. It was going to allow me the opportunity to play Fatal Frame 4! The Fatal Frame series is my favorite survival horror series. I was SO excited! Plus, it allowed me to play old NES, SNES and N64 games thanks to the Virtual Console. AND, I could also play my Gamecube games on there. Sure, it couldn't store pictures, music and movies. And it doesn't have the best setup for online gaming. But still! ...Then it was announced that Fatal Frame 4 was never coming to America.
What did my Wii do then? I owned Wii games, sure. But I didn't really like most of them. And some, I didn't care about one way or the other. They were decent, but not amazing. And at a time when I was discovering the Disgaea series and playing it on my PS3 (Disgaea 3 would go on to become my favorite game of all time), what did the Wii really have to offer? It offered me NES, SNES and N64 games. And the ability to play my Gamecube games, which was pointless since I already HAD a Gamecube. I was playing games on there that I LOVED, that were released for OTHER consoles. The Wii offered me what older consoles had already offered. It wasn't giving me anything new. I wasn't enjoying the Wii, I was enjoying those other consoles. And I was bitter over the fact that I bought it exclusively for Fatal Frame 4, and I would never get the chance to play it now, because apparently, it's "not [Reggie's] problem."
The PS3 kept offering me new games to play. Online multiplayer was fun, and really, there was nothing for me to complain about. Aside from my brief lapse in judgment when I first bought the Wii, I still loved my PS3.
I won't even get into the issue of the DS vs. the PSP right now, I'll save that for another post.
The point is, I can back up my opinions. I feel the way I do for a reason. It's not just, "The Wii sucks!" And that's it. The Wii doesn't meet my gaming needs. And as for my distaste for the Xbox, well...Aside from the RRoD issue, it's just not for me. I'm not interested in FPS games. The RPGs I want to play are not available on the 360. And the survival horror series I'm interested in release their games for both consoles, so it would be completely unnecessary to buy a 360. Plus, Microsoft charges you to play online, while Sony allows you to do so for free. (Granted, they're going to start charging for premium accounts, but everything that you've been able to do up until now is STILL going to be free.) I DO love my PS3, but everyone has a preference. That's mine.

Catching Fire

I finished reading this book like...A month ago? And I really wanted to review it and expand on the post I made about Hunger Games, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I will though! It was so, so amazing. But again, I was left with a feeling of wanting to throw the book across the room after I finished reading it. I cannot wait for Mockingjay to come out in August.

He's so sneaky

You don't even see him until it's too late and he's already sprawled out on the floor. Isn't he cute? :)

Makeup can completely transform a person, and to prove it, let's play a game.

These pictures were taken from Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin. Sorry about the glare. :) Anyway, the book is completely amazing, and I definitely recommend it.
I'm not going to say who these women are, but feel free to guess. I promise, you've heard of all of them before. As for who they're portraying...That might be left in the pictures. The only reason I cut some of them is because their names were in the description and I didn't want to give it away.

Battle Royale vs. The Hunger Games

I would like to preface this by saying that I believe my interest in books involving controlling governments stems from reading The Giver when I was in school. Out of all the books we were assigned to read, few of them really struck me. But I'll still flip open The Giver (as well as A Wrinkle in Time, the only other book to leave a lasting impression on me from school) every now and then.
Originally, I had intended to write a comparison of Battle Royale, the novel, and Battle Royale, the movie. I started rereading the book, taking notes and then I realized that by the time I'd reached page twenty, I already had three pages of notes. It's 576 pages long. You can see where I'm going with this, right? That's what lead me to this comparison instead.
For a while now, I've been debating whether or not to read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I finally caved and began reading it on Monday. I finished it on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the book is only 374 pages. I've always enjoyed reading, and I never want books to end. I suppose it's forgivable, as the story is continued in two other novels, Catching Fire (which I have not read, but I did order it this morning) and Mockingjay (to be released in August). For the sake of this post, and also because I have no idea what happens after the first book, Catching Fire and Mockingjay will not be taken into consideration and I will treat them as if they don't even exist. All I know is what occurred in The Hunger Games.
There are massive spoilers ahead for both Battle Royale and The Hunger Games, so I suggest you stop reading this now if you don't want to know how either ends.

Someone get Tory Burch a color wheel

"I'm not sure blue and orange are that complementary."
I am referring to what she said during judging on Project Runway this week. Maybe Amy's design was flawed, but it had nothing to do with the colors.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
The one that I have trouble putting down at the end of the night when I can barely keep my eyes open any longer is Battle Royale.
I watched the movie first. "Actor-redemption" for Tatsuya Fujiwara after hating him (well, not really him, but his character) for four and a half hours during the Death Note films. Anyway. The film version was pretty good, if not somewhat predictable. It was unsettling to see these junior high school students killing eachother, usually without giving it a second thought...But I felt pretty detached from it all. Really, there's only so much you can accomplish in a movie that lasts for less than two hours and features 42 different students in the lineup. How much characterization could there possibly be? That doesn't make it a bad film, it just makes it a bit harder to be drawn into it.
As for the book...Well. Between working during the day and falling asleep at 8:00 the past couple nights, there hasn't been much time to read it (I've only had it since Tuesday). I've just now reached page 100, the beginning of Part 2, with 31 students remaining. (It's worth noting that the novel is over 500 pages.) I've always loved reading. It's so easy to get lost in a good book. This one hasn't let go of my attention for a minute.
What I can say so far, though, is that what the movie lacked in characterization, the book more than makes up for. (For the record, the book came first.) You learn the backgrounds of each student, where they come from, what type of person they were before being thrown into a "game" where the objective is to kill all their classmates and be the lone survivor, the "winner," if you consider murdering your friends and classmates as winning at the end of the day.
It's not a book I could recommend for everyone, because it is pretty detailed, thus making it incredibly disturbing at times. But if you can handle it, it's definitely an interesting novel.
