So, I'll start with the things I didn't like in the game. Spoilers, of course, I suggest you stop reading this now if you haven't played the game yet and you plan to at some point.
I've made it pretty clear over the past year and a half or so that I wasn't really...Happy...With the direction Resident Evil 5 was headed in. From the trailers, it looked exactly like Resident Evil 4. And to some extent, I still feel that way. Parasite enemies? Check. Weapon upgrades? Check. Button prompts? Check. Swamp areas? Check. (Seriously, why is Capcom recycling locations?)
My main concern was that Chris, my favorite character in the Resident Evil series, would have a major personality change. Instead, he doesn't have much of a personality at all. I do not play as Chris, I only used him for one chapter, and that's because you need to play as him to earn one of the trophies. The problem with Chris is that his arms are bigger than his head, and his shoulders take up half the screen.
This game, despite what the fanboys may try to tell you, is not survival horror. It's a third person shooter. Basically. I miss the old Resident Evil games, but I will say this: Resident Evil 5 is vastly superior to Resident Evil 4. And I think at least half of the reason for that is because this game lacks Leon and Ada. No, I'm not a fan of either of those characters. I never, ever thought Ada was a decent character, and Leon...I don't know what happened to him after Raccoon City, but something triggered a major personality change in him. (Poor script writers?)
Wesker looks like he just stepped out of the Matrix, but I can't blame this entirely on Resident Evil 5, because he was pretty crazy in Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, too:
And seeing how, after REmake, CVX is my favorite Resident Evil game, I can't like Resident Evil 5 less because Wesker is super-human. Or is he even human anymore? I don't think he is, he's got all kinds of viruses in him.
One of the major flaws, in my opinion, is that the game doesn't explain anything. There are files that you acquire for beating certain chapters, and if you want to have a clue as to what's going on with the game's story, you'd better read all of them. They're long (some are upwards of 30 pages, I believe), but they make sense of things that the game itself will leave you wondering about. Like why the hell Jill is a blonde, and what Spencer is talking about when he tells Wesker he was manufactured.
By the way, for anyone that's seen Underworld...Doesn't Spencer remind you of Viktor? Anyway...
I liked the scenes with Jill. I've never been crazy about her, but the fact that she practically threw herself out a window to save Chris made her more likable. She gained a personality in Resident Evil 5. At least someone did.
There are Lickers in this game. LICKERS. Resident Evil 2 Lickers. I know, what the eff, right? A Resident Evil game has real Resident Evil enemies?? How did that happen? I don't know, but I loved it. And it's not like there's one or two of them, they are in packs and theywill destroy you.
The best part about Resident Evil 5 is online co-op. I never completed this game using the AI, I always had a partner online. The AI...Is terrible. I don't know how anyone beats Professional difficulty using it. That's another thing...Beating Professional, especially with a human partner, isn't that much of an accomplishment. The first time I completed it, it was incredibly easy. The second time I played through it, I had a different partner and things didn't go very well with him...I don't really think it was his fault, we both just had such different tactics for beating the game that he'd go do his thing, I'd do mine, and...If you get hit on Pro, it's basically a one hit kill. Your partner has to be right on top of you, and able to heal you within like...Three seconds, or it's game over. And since I refuse to get a mic for my PS3, it's hard to discuss how to tackle certain situations.
My favorite thing to play in Resident Evil 5 is Versus. Team Slayers. I was ranked...#14 in the world in the Missile Area on Team Slayers. But I haven't played in a few weeks, so I'm sure my rank has dropped. A lot. Anyway, the point of Slayers/Team Slayers is to kill as many enemies as possible and get the highest score. The point of Survivors/Team Survivors is to kill the other players and get the highest score before time runs out. I don't really like Survivors, you don't get points for killing enemies, and I find it pretty boring to go after the other players, especially since they're always 1) Battle Suit Jill or 2) Safari Chris. Also, I've noticed something. If you're playing Team Slayers, and someone on the other team chooses ANY Chris or ANY Sheva, they're probably going to kill you. Just an observation I've made, and I don't know why it works out that way, but it does.
Overall, I'd say RE5 is very entertaining and has a lot of replayability. Just don't go into it expecting it to feel like the old Resident Evil games, because that will only lead to disappointment.
