Again...There's a clipping issue. Laharl's head tends to disappear into the walls. I've also noticed that when I walk up the stairs in the castle, he'll sometimes get stuck, and I'll have to make him walk back down the stairs and climb up in a different spot. However, as I rarely ever go up/down those stairs (except for when I go to check Etna's diary), it's not too terrible.
I would attempt to explain the story here, but it gets so complex...Let's see. After a two-year-long nap, Laharl wakes up to find that his father, King Krichevskoy, has died. The demons of the Netherworld are now fighting for the title of Overlord, which belongs to Laharl. There's betrayal and a huge conspiracy involving the Netherworld, Celestia and the Human World...I'm trying not to spoil the entire game.
There was a plot point that I was able to guess from the very beginning of the game. Mid-Boss...Is Laharl's father. Yes, it's true. They never come out and say it in the game, but the World of Disgaea book (it's official, by the way) confirms it, as well as the manga and anime (though I wouldn't consider anything stated in either of those as fact). Krichevskoy was reincarnated as the Dark Adonis (Mid-Boss). I'd like to take a moment to say that for MOST of the game, I despised Mid-Boss. He killed me in Episode 4 and caused me SO much confusion, because instead of a "Game Over" screen, the credits came on. If you lose to him in ANY of the episodes, the game ends and you get to start a new cycle. It's actually not a bad strategy to lose to him in Episode 4 after you've leveled up a bit, because your characters will stay at their current levels, you'll still have all of your weapons/armor/items/HL/pupils, and you'll be able to start the game over with a bit of an advantage. Believe me, if you go into the last fight blind like I did, you'll want to be at a high level.
I was VERY surprised in Episode 8. After you die, you're reincarnated as a Prinny and given the chance to atone for your sins. Big Sis Prinny is pink, and she's very different from the other prinnies, but it never occurred to me that there was something special about her. You learn during the course of the game that Laharl's mother killed herself in order to save Laharl and because of that, Laharl hates love and anything to do with it. In Episode 8, it's revealed that Big Sis Prinny is actually Laharl's mother.
Once I finished the final fight, I was VERY upset, I thought I received the bad ending. If that tells you anything...The Seraph turns Flonne into a flower as punishment for her actions, and Laharl (in the final fight) kills the Seraph, only to learn from Mid-Boss that had he spared the Seraph's life, Flonne's life would have been restored. The Seraph had been testing his heart. Laharl then asks Etna, his vassal, to take care of the Netherworld for him and sacrifices his own life in exchange for Flonne's. (Because he loves her, awww. Or at least, I like to believe he does.) After the credits roll, the screen is black and you listen in on an interesting conversation between Flonne and "Queen" Etna about a new Prinny with something on his head...Have I mentioned that Laharl kind of looks like he has antennae?
I won't lie. The game totally had me tearing up. As did Disgaea 3. (And Fatal Frame 2, not that this has anything to do with THAT.)
Now. Onto...Everything else. You can level up to 9,999 in this game. It will probably take you 25 years, and I don't see why you'd want to, other than for the sake of completion, but...You're given the option. You can also level up your weapons in the Item World, and unlock...Five new maps, I believe, in the Dark Assembly. There are other bills you can pass there as well, and sometimes it's easier to manipulate the system a bit than to fight after the Senate votes against you. (Throw lower level enemies into higher-level monsters that voted with you, and you won't have to fight them.)
Honestly...There's more to the game, I haven't figured everything out yet. Nor have I figured everything out in Disgaea 3, there's just SO much to do.
Go buy the game. :)
(I still think Mao is cooler than Laharl.)
